THE FRAMEBERRY FIELD NOTES

How to make a product demo video people can follow

A product demo works best when someone can see a useful outcome and understand how to reach it. Build the video around one task, show the real interface and explain the decisions that matter.

1. Choose one outcome for the viewer

Write a simple sentence before recording: “After watching this, the viewer should be able to…” Finish it with a task your product can actually help them complete. For example, “turn a class list into personalized certificates” is more concrete than “understand our platform.”

A homepage demo can introduce a product’s main workflow. A help-center video usually needs a narrower task. Decide which job this video is doing so the opening, recording and ending support the same outcome.

2. Plan a beginning, a task and a result

Start by showing the situation or finished result that makes the task useful. Then demonstrate the necessary steps in order. End with the result on screen long enough for the viewer to recognize it.

  1. Context: What is the viewer trying to accomplish?
  2. Action: Which steps produce that result?
  3. Result: What changed, and what can they do next?

Leave unrelated features for another video. A clear explanation of one useful task gives viewers something they can apply immediately.

3. Record the real product with clean example data

Use realistic sample information that demonstrates the workflow without exposing a customer’s details. Close notifications and unrelated tabs. Check that text, selections and results remain readable at the size where you plan to publish the video.

Record the task at a steady pace. If you make a mistake, return to a clear starting point and repeat the step. Editing is easier when each action has an identifiable beginning and end. Keep the source file for future updates.

4. Explain the useful decisions

Narration should connect the interface to the viewer’s goal. Rather than reading every button, explain why you select a particular option and what happens next. Use short sentences and concrete names from the screen.

A useful demo line

“Choose the certificate template, then match the name field to your class list. Each student gets a certificate with their own name.”

If that behavior has not been verified in your product, change the line. Product demo videos should show what the software does today. Review an AI-written draft for accuracy before generating or sharing the voiceover.

5. Add polish that helps understanding

Readable captions, consistent narration and a clean start and ending can make a simple recording easier to follow. Music is optional. Extra effects earn their place only when they help someone understand the task.

Frameberry offers editable narration, captions, timing controls and optional music. It starts with recordings or images you supply. It does not automatically log into your software or capture the workflow for you.

6. Review it as a first-time viewer

Watch the exported video from start to finish. Can someone identify the goal without extra context? Does each spoken instruction match the screen? Is the final outcome visible? Could captions obscure an important field?

Try following the task yourself from the video. Fix missing steps and outdated labels before sharing. After a product update, revisit recordings that show changed screens. Saving the script and original footage makes future corrections easier.

Make related videos without repeating everything

A feature announcement, onboarding clip and support tutorial can share source material, but they serve different questions. Give each video its own opening and explanation instead of stretching one long demo across every audience.

Start with the task people most often need to understand. Then build a small library of focused explanations, each with a clear title and a useful result. For narration planning, read the companion voiceover guide.
